Scaffolding in Mellor

Mellor stands on its hilltop above the Ribble Valley, a village of weathered stone cottages and farmhouses where the views run from Pendle to the Bowland fells and the wind gets a proper run at every chimney stack. We scaffold here regularly, about 20 minutes from our Preston base, with free surveys and honest fixed quotes on every job.

Mellor's stone cottages and farmhouses were built to take the weather, but their chimneys and rooflines still bear the brunt of it, so chimney stack scaffolds, roof repair platforms and repointing access make up most of our work in the village. Solid stone walls need thought about tie positions and packing, and everything we erect follows TG20:21, with a bespoke design from a competent designer for anything outside its scope.

The hilltop exposure changes how we build. Sheeting and debris netting are specified with wind in mind, ties are planned accordingly, and on top of the routine inspections the Work at Height Regulations require, a competent person checks the scaffold again after storms or anything else likely to affect stability. The lanes through the village are narrow in places, so we agree delivery timings and unloading points at the survey rather than on the morning.

From Preston we reach Mellor in about 20 minutes via the A59 and A677, which makes it one of the quickest villages in this region for surveys, adaptations and strike dates. Ribble Valley Borough Council is the planning authority for underlying works. We also cover Mellor Brook at the bottom of the hill, along with Balderstone, Osbaldeston, Salesbury and Wilpshire, so grouped bookings across the parish are easy to arrange.

Scaffolding in Mellor — your questions answered

How much does scaffolding cost in Mellor?

Prices start from around £450 for a single elevation, with most Mellor jobs between £600 and £900 for one side and £850 to £1,200 for a full two storey scaffold. Chimney scaffolds start from around £400 and full wraps from around £1,500. Stone walls and the village's exposed position can shape the tie and sheeting specification, which we confirm on the free survey. Quotes always state whether VAT is included, and the price covers transport, erection, the hire period and dismantling.

How much does a chimney scaffold cost in Mellor?

Chimney scaffolds in Mellor typically start from around £400 for a two storey cottage or farmhouse, boarded out at gutter level or saddled over the ridge, rising to £700 to £1,200 for taller properties needing platforms around all four sides of the stack. Bungalow stacks start from around £250. Mellor's hilltop stacks take real weather, so repairs are a regular call out here, they usually need the scaffold for only 1 to 2 weeks, and we quote an extension rate up front.

Can the scaffold go on my neighbour's land or hang over their garden?

Not without permission. A neighbour can refuse access over their private land, and oversailing their airspace without consent can be trespass. Where the building works are notifiable under the Party Wall etc. Act 1996, Section 8 gives a right of access with compensation for any loss, and for pure repair and maintenance the Access to Neighbouring Land Act 1992 allows a county court application. In practice, in a village like Mellor most of this is settled with a polite early conversation, which we can help with.

How quickly can you get scaffolding up in Mellor?

We are about 20 minutes from Mellor, so we can usually survey within 24 hours of your call. Most domestic scaffolds go up in 2 to 8 hours, with a typical two storey property taking around 3 to 5 hours on site, all indicative timings we confirm at the survey. Most Mellor scaffolds stand on the property's own land, so there is rarely a licence lead time, and jobs often start within a few days of the quote being approved.
