Scaffolding in Hoghton

Hoghton is Hoghton Tower country, a rural parish of stone farmhouses, cottages and barn conversions scattered along the A675 and the lanes dropping into the wooded gorge at Hoghton Bottoms. We are about twenty minutes from our Preston base, erecting TG20:21 compliant scaffolds for stone repairs, roof renewals and chimney work across the parish.

Scaffolding stone buildings is a different job from scaffolding modern brick. Solid walls do not always take ties where you want them, so on Hoghton's farmhouses and cottages we often design freestanding or buttressed scaffolds that avoid drilling the historic fabric, and we agree fixings in advance where a building is listed. Typical work includes repointing with lime, roof slating, chimney rebuilds and gutter renewals, plus temporary roofs over barn conversion projects.

Access takes planning here. Some farms and cottages sit down single track lanes with awkward turning, so we survey every job in person and match the wagon to the route. Exposed sites facing the fells get extra ties and bracing, and the scaffold is inspected before first use, at intervals not exceeding 7 days, and after any storm. From Hoghton we also cover Riley Green, Gregson Lane, Brindle and Coupe Green.

Scaffolding in Hoghton — your questions answered

How much does scaffolding cost in Hoghton?

As a guide, prices in Hoghton start from around £450 for a single elevation, typically £600 to £900, with full scaffolds on farmhouses and larger detached properties usually £1,400 to £2,500. Stone walls and single track access can add to the build time, which is why every quote follows a free survey. Chimney scaffolds start from around £400. We always state whether VAT is included, and the price covers transport, erection, the hire period and dismantling.

How much does a chimney scaffold cost in Hoghton?

Chimney scaffolds in Hoghton typically start from around £400 for a two storey property, boarded at gutter level or saddled over the ridge, with taller or stone built stacks needing platforms on all four sides running £700 to £1,200. Bungalow stacks start from around £250. Stone stacks on the parish's older farmhouses often need a saddle over the ridge and careful tie planning into solid walls. Chimney scaffolds are usually only up for 1 to 2 weeks, and we quote an extension rate in advance in case the repair overruns.

How often is the scaffold checked once it is up, and what paperwork do I get?

Under the Work at Height Regulations 2005 a competent person inspects the scaffold before first use, then at intervals not exceeding 7 days, and after any alteration, damage or event likely to affect stability such as storms, which matters on Hoghton's exposed ground facing the fells. Reports stay on site while work continues and are retained for three months after completion. At handover you receive a scaffold handover certificate recording the specification, load class, permitted use and tie details, plus a TG20 compliance sheet or bespoke design where applicable.
