Much of Walton-le-Dale's older housing is Victorian terraced stock strung along the A6 corridor and the streets off Chorley Road and Victoria Road, with semis and bungalows filling the later streets behind. On the terraces the regular calls are chimney stack repairs, roof replacements, gutter and fascia renewals and repointing, which usually means a three or four lift scaffold boarded at gutter level or saddled over the ridge. On the semis we handle everything from a single elevation for roof repairs, typically £600 to £900, up to full three sided scaffolds for complete roof jobs.

Plenty of terraced frontages here open straight onto the footpath, so the scaffold often has to stand on the public highway. That needs a licence from Lancashire County Council, which charges £42 per 7 days and asks for at least two working days notice. We handle the application, the £5 million public liability evidence and any traffic management plan, and we build the lead time into the programme so the job is not held up. Where we can base the scaffold in a rear yard or off the back alley instead, we will, since it saves the licence fee altogether.

Being ten minutes from base means surveys usually within 24 hours and a fast strike once your trades finish. South Ribble Borough Council is the planning authority for any underlying building work, though the scaffold itself needs no planning permission. From Walton-le-Dale we also cover Higher Walton, Bamber Bridge and Lostock Hall daily, so we can often slot smaller jobs such as gutter towers or chimney scaffolds alongside work already booked nearby.

Scaffolding in Walton-le-Dale — your questions answered

How much does scaffolding cost in Walton-le-Dale?

As a guide, prices start from around £450 for a single elevation on a typical semi, with most Walton-le-Dale jobs landing between £600 and £900 for one side and £850 to £1,200 for a full two storey scaffold. Chimney scaffolds start from around £400 and full wraps from around £1,500. The terraced streets off the A6 sometimes need a pavement licence, which adds the council's £42 per 7 days fee. Every property is different, so we price after a free survey, our quotes always state whether VAT is included, and the price covers transport, erection, the hire period and dismantling.

How much does a chimney scaffold cost in Walton-le-Dale?

Chimney scaffolds on Walton-le-Dale's two storey Victorian terraces typically start from around £400, boarded out at gutter level or saddled over the ridge. Taller three storey properties needing platforms around all four sides of the stack usually run £700 to £1,200, and bungalow stacks start from around £250. Most chimney repairs only need the scaffold for 1 to 2 weeks, and we quote an extension rate up front in case the work overruns.

How much does a scaffold licence cost in Lancashire and how long does it take?

Lancashire County Council charges £42 per 7 days for a scaffold licence, requires at least two working days notice, and aims to respond within 24 hours. The applicant must hold at least £5 million public liability insurance, which we do. Where pedestrians would need to step into the road, the council also requires a traffic management plan, which we prepare and submit. On Walton-le-Dale's terraced frontages this is a routine part of the job for us, and we factor it into both the schedule and the quote.

Do you actually cover Walton-le-Dale? You are based in Preston.

Yes, Walton-le-Dale is about as local as it gets for us, roughly ten minutes from our Preston base straight down the A6 and over the Ribble. That means fast surveys, quick adaptations mid job, prompt inspections after storms and a quick strike date once your trades finish. We are in Higher Walton, Bamber Bridge and Lostock Hall on a regular basis too, so small jobs can often be fitted in alongside work already booked nearby.
