Scaffolding in Longridge

Longridge is a stone town, built from the rock quarried on its own doorstep at Tootle Heights, and that stone shapes most of the scaffolding work we do here. The terraces around Berry Lane, Market Place and the streets running off them carry solid masonry walls, heavy slate and stone slate roofs and tall shared chimney stacks, so the regular calls are chimney scaffolds boarded at gutter level, full roof line scaffolds for reroofing, and access platforms for repointing weathered stonework.

Away from the old centre the town changes character. There are interwar semis along the Preston and Inglewhite roads and a spread of newer estates on the western edge of town, where the work is more often fascia and soffit replacement, solar panel scaffolds, dormer and loft conversion platforms and gable end scaffolds for render or roof repairs. On the newer developments we plan lifts around garages, conservatories and close neighbouring plots, and protect drives and block paving with sole boards.

We are about 8 miles from Longridge, usually around 20 minutes up the B6243 through Grimsargh from our Preston base, so the town sits firmly inside our everyday working patch. That closeness matters in practice. We can normally survey within 24 hours, most domestic scaffolds are erected in a single visit of 2 to 8 hours, and once your roofer or builder finishes we can strike the scaffold quickly rather than leaving it standing for weeks.

Access needs a little planning in the older streets. Plenty of terraces near the centre open straight onto the footpath, so the scaffold often has to stand on the pavement, which needs a licence from Lancashire County Council at a small weekly fee with at least two working days notice. We arrange that as part of the job, along with the £5 million public liability cover the council requires. The conservation area covering Berry Lane and Market Place does not restrict scaffolding itself, though Ribble Valley Borough Council is the planning authority if your underlying works need consent, and we keep scaffolds tidy and netted in the historic core.

From Longridge we cover the whole of the surrounding PR3 countryside. Dilworth and Alston are effectively part of town and get the same response times, while Knowle Green, Ribchester, Chipping, Thornley and Hurst Green are all short runs out along the B6243 and the Chipping road. Erection is usually within 3 to 5 working days of quote approval, sooner where no licence is involved.
